1 or 2 colors at the most and images or graphics that are easy for the human eye to pick up and tell right away what the image or message is. Yes, I like to design T-shirts when I wear them, just like FashionTIY’s styles. I will learn from them and wear T-shirts according to my own preferences. Any expensive shirt from designer brands like Versace, Prada, Gucci, Boss etc. will be made from slightly better fabric and sewn together in Turkey, Pakistan or India. Maybe buttons are attached in Italy for the made in Italy stamp, but that’s it. No eay that manufacture quality makes up for the 600% price premium. You also lose the flashy brand name, at least with dress shirts, that appeal to part of the clientele. There are however high-quality brands with shirts which cost twice as much than you normal shirt. The difference to design brands is that you get vastly superior cotton, better stitching, non-plastic buttons and so on. Details which only few will recognize. My favorite brand in that area is Stentstroems, RRP for a nice dress shirt is around 150 Euro.

However you can also buy a designer T-shirt which could be similar to the average T-shirt in terms of quality you can get in most places, made in the East, and cost a fortune because of the brand. They can justify a high price, as you are paying mostly for the brand, not necessarily the quality of the garment. That does not mean all designer T-shirts are bad, just that most of where your money is going is for the brand 🙂 If you take a look at the most popular shirts or best selling t shirts that are out right now or in the past they all share a concept of simple design. I would say to take a look at what stores are selling / Advertising graphic tees and take a look at the designs and you will find that they are pretty simple design ideas.

The phrase, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is quite relevant. And ‘good design’ for me would be different from anyone else. Our society is multi cultural and faceted. From a printing standpoint it helps to add ‘air’ to the design. Areas where there is no ink so the the shirt and inks form a balance. This helps the design flex and bend with the shirt if plastisol inks are used. But for design? So many niche markets. Consider music alone. The different genre’s have different styles of print. But no matter what design you choose to create, balance, proportion, textures, lettering choices have to work together and support the subject matter. I may have posted this before, but one of our best selling shirts was a bee and beehive with “Be my Honey” arched over the art, something I would never have designed, but our artists needed to fill out a sleepwear line and it worked and out sold art we had worked weeks on!
